NAGYCENK

The main sight of Nagycenk is the early classicist Széchenyi-castle. Today it is the home of Széchenyi István Museum, hotel, café, stud and riding school. In the 1970's a train museum was established here, trains in the similar type and form travel around the Fertõ landscape due to the timetable that can be found in the Széchenyi István Museum.

FERTÕD

The greatest architectural work of Hungary from the 18th century can be found in Fertõd, formerly Eszterháza. The Esterházy castle, the "Hungarian Versailles" is one of the most beautiful castle-system of Hungary. The castle had the most significant role in 1768-1790. J. Haydn, (1732-1809) the last royal musician of music history spent almost two decades in the service the 'the parade loving' contributor of arts and culture Prince Eszterházy Miklós.

FERTÕRÁKOS - FERTÕ-LAKE

The main sight of Fertõrákos-Fertõ-lake is the quarry. There is a 10-12 m high with a superb acoustics cave theatre in every summer. At the Fertõrákos-Mörbisch border passenger and cycling way we can find a Roman Mithras-sanctuary. The village is tied with the villages of Fertõ, Sopron and Austria with a cycling way around the lake. The only build-up holiday settlement can be approached from the village.

THE MITHRAS SANCTUARY

The Mithras Sanctuary near the Austrian-Hungarian border was discovered in 1866, but it was completely destroyed after World War I. However, the verifying excavation and the careful reconstruction work carried out in 1990-91 brought this strange mystery religion closer to us. The Persian soldiers stationing in the nearby Carnuntum erected a chapel in the 3rd century for Mithras, the invincible God of Sun, the symbol of light and life. Mithras kills the bull, the symbol of darkness and evil, in the cave. The main cultic picture opposite the entrance of the cave-like sanctuary shows this moment. The raised banks along the longer sides of the chapel were built for the initiated participants, while the ceremony itself was held in the middle.

FERTÕSZÉPLAK

The main street of Fertõszéplak with its uniformly laid-out herringbone houses has been included in every serious book on folk architecture since 1930. The five old buildings today host an open-air ethnographical museum. The buildings are prominent examples of peasant-Baroque architecture. The exhibition shows the history, life, folk art and everyday tools of people living in the Fertõ region. Every single house is a treasure in itself, the result of the careful, invaluable and enthusiastic work done by the collectors.

MUSEUM OF RAILWAY LAMPS

Visitors are welcome to have a look at József Haragovics's private collection of railway lamps exhibited in a cottage with veranda built at the beginning of the last century, in Fertõszéplak. The special lamps used in different railway lines in 21 countries recall the beauty of old times. Visitors can see 246 pieces of lamps characterising several railway companies in the world, from the Netherlands to Mongolia, and to the United States. The exhibition showing the special pieces of lamps once used in the Hungarian railway network is unique in its kind.
