Sights of Sopron (Sopron)

Sopron can be found next to west border of Hungary, at the foot of Alps, 60 kms from Vienna and 220kms from Budapest. One of the most ancient jewel towns of the country. The town unifies the present and the past in itself being a bridge between east and west neighbours of the country. Sopron open its gates in front of the Hungarian and foreign visitors. Traditions of art in Sopron are almost 70 years old and going back to the age, which is called Golden Age by civilization studies on Sopron. The natural environment, exhilarating, healing alpine air, walking path of mountains with forests, look-out towers, springs Fertõ-lake create Sopron one of the most beautiful, most pleasant holiday resorts of Hungary.

FIRE TOWER

The symbol of Sopron city is the Fire Tower (Tûztorony). The pillbox had been built on the remains of Roman walls and it served as the north gate-tower of the city from the beginning of 13th century. Its current form, baroque circle balcony and steeple developed after the Great Fire of 1676. Guards of Fire Tower had a great role; they were watching the region with lanterns and in the day they showed the direction of fire with coloured banners. They raised the attention of citizens on foreign wine carts and approaching soldiers. Fire Tower is the symbol of Faith. In the popular vote of 14th December, 1921 Sopron and 8 other villages stated their belonging to Hungary. In remembering the events a baroque gate frame was created on the basis of the plans by Hikisch Rezsõ in 1928 and above the work of Kisfaludy Strobl Zsigmond a composition of sculptures "Soproners admiring Hungária".


TOWN HALL

Predeccesor of the town hall stands in the place of buildings that were made in the Middle Ages. As the Town tower, this building had also been damaged by the fire of 1676. It was pulled down at the end of the 19th century and the current building was built in 1985 in eclectic style. On the first floor there is an archives, where we can find one of the richest town collections of Hungary (approximately 5000 documents from the Middle Ages). The fretwork on the door (1782) is the only remained piece of the old town hall. The big hall is decorated with frescos of Sterbenz Károly.


STORNO-HOUSE

One of the most beautiful buildings of Sopron, this palace-like baroque corner house is one of the ornaments of Main square (Fõ tér). In the 15th century it was owned by the Haberleiter family, who received in the winter of 1482-83 King Matthias, when he was besieging Vienna. In the 18th century the house the house entered into the possession of Festetics family and had its final form. Storno family bought the building in 1872, where Liszt Ferenc gave a concert in 1840 and in 1881 as a guest. Characteristics of the house is the two-floored, richly decorated, closed corner balcony and the domed gate surrounded by Tuscan half-columns with the Festetics-crest on it and the classic Pelican-knocker. In the 15th century there was the first pharmacy of Sopron here, the Black Elephant. Storno Ferenc saved more masterpieces and based the famous Storno collection.


GOAT CHURCH

Grey friars of Sopron built their monastery in the centre of the town, then about 1280 their church as one of the most outstanding works of gothic architecture. The grey friars were disbanded by Joseph the Second, in 1787, Goat Church (folk name) entered the possession into Benedictine friars. Among these walls kings and queens were crowned and were also the place of parliament. Its graceful, fine designed tower is an essential element of the supreme Main square. Works of church fresco painters and decorators, lancet windows and the special Kapisztrán-pulpit are the representatives of outstanding values.


STATUE OF HOLY TRINITY

Prominent work of baroque sculpture. It was erected in 1695-1701 by Löwenburg Jakab and his wife, Thököly Katalin in gratitude so as they could escape from plague epidemic. The artist is unknown. Its basement consist of three squared prisms representing the statues of the founders and their guardian angels. The twisted columns are decorated with angels and flower strings. At the top of the column a We can see the Holy Trinity Group. The statue matches properly the square monuments.


PHARMACY MUSEUM

The first provision national monument protection can be associated with this house. During the reign of Louis the Second town council wanted to demolish the building so as to extend place but the king denied it claiming that it would damage integrated beauty of the square. From the mid-18th century it had worked as a pharmacy (was called Angel Pharmacy) and also had served as a home for pharmacist and physician families. The most famous of them was Gensel Ádám (1677-1720) physician of meteorology, who discovered the effects of fronts on human body. It had been an arcade house until its renovating of 1850.


FABRICIUS-HOUSE

The curiosity of the building that archaeologist found the ruin of a Roman bath under. In the 14th century there were two houses standing here, the back building was two-floored building that time. The gothic hall is beautiful, the loggia that was built in the 17th century and the gothic and baroque cellars behind are also attractive. Owners of the buildings had always been wealthy and respectable citizens and traders. The house was named after Fabricius Endre town magistrate and mayor; he bought the house in 1806. He was a friend of Petõfi Sándorhoz. The poet ran off the barrack and changed his clothes in this house so he could take part in the concert of Liszt Ferenc.


GENERAL-HOUSE

The building originating from the Middle-Ages was the house of Lackner Kristóf mayor in the beginning of the 17th century. The main façade had been created that time; the classicist balcony was made in 1830. On the domed keystone we can find the crest and motto of Lackner Kristóf. In the loggia court there is a residence tower and a stone store under the arcade of downstairs. When Lackner Kristóf left the house to the town, it became the home for generals of the town; therefore it can be called Lackner House or General-house.


ESTERHÁZY-PALACE

Among almost twenty exhibitions of our town, the greatest and most overall is the Hungarian mine historical exhibition in the Central Mining Museum. Eszterházy baroque palace is a worthy place for the valuable collection. After visiting the exhibition we can find pleasure in the tower garden behind the museum, relax in the small baroque music hall. This exhibition won the extra award for 'Museum of the year in 2001. It represents remains of precious metal mining that had been significant in Europe over centuries, results of 19th century mining industry and technological development.


EVANGELICAL CHURCH

It was built between 1782-1783 in baroque style. Its 52 m high tower was built 80 years later in neo-roman style. The three-nave hall is surrounded by a two-floored oft. The gold-platted wooden altar is from the Kahlenberg cluster of Vienna, the altar painting is a work by Fischer Vince. The fretwork pulpit was made by Láng Mátyás, a Soproner carpenter. The font was made in romantic style about 1860. The organ was produced in 1884; there are organ concerts regularly in the church.


ORSOLYITA CHURCH

The neo-gothic church one of the most beautiful buildings of the 19th century. Its octagonal tower is 32 m high. Handler Nándor built in between 1861-1864. The convent and the school were also built by the plans of Handler. In front of the church there is the Maria-well in copf-style from the 18th century, was originally stood in the court of the grey-friar and Benedictine cluster and has been standing in the present place since 1930.


CÉZÁR-HOUSE

Art history called Horváth József (1891-1961) 'The great painter of Sopron', 'The classic painter of aquarelle', 'The poet of aquarelle', who was named Soproni (Soproner) Horváth József by the citizens. However he was not born in Sopron but his art and life made him a Soproner. His most beautiful aquarelles were collected permanent exhibition. The painter studied in the College of Fine Arts and Nagybánya, one of the most famous art villages. He performed everlasting art in every area but he became famous by his nudes and genres. He made his art complete by these works, he had no predecessors, no followers. His bequest is preserved in the honour museum, founded by his widow. It is in the Cézár-house, in Sopron.


EGGENBERG-HOUSE

It was built on base remained from the Middle-Ages, in late renaissance style, in the 17th century. The widow of Eggenberg János bought it in 1674. Since during the anti-reformation, churches of Sopron evangelists were taken away, the princess,as a relative of the earl of Brandenburg, was allowed to keep protestant services in her court of the house. There is the pulpit in the curb, in the loggia court and Hohenzollern-crest can be found on it.


ST GEORGE-CHURCH

It was built between 1380-1430 in gothic style and after the fire of 1676-os it was converted into baroque style. In 1882 an eclectic tower was erected in the place of the destroyed one. The church that had been protestant since the end of the 16th century, in 1674 it became Jesuit. Stuccos of sidewalls and ceiling were made by Pietro Antonio Conti in the 18th century. The main altar painting was made by Martin Altomonte, the altar paintings of the chapels by Dorfmeister István, Schaller István and Storno Ferenc Senior. Frescos of sidechapels were painted by Wosinski Kázmér.


OLD-SYNAGOGUE

The tabernacle of the Soproner Jewish Group in the Middle-Ages had been built in the 13th century and had been operated until 1526. Then it was rebuilt several times. Entering its domed gate of the 18th century we can see the entrance of the former hospital. From the corridor of the Middle-Ages we can enter the conventicler, the woman synagogue and ritual bath. Through the gothic gate we can enter the big hall, where there is a Torah reading table in the middle. The exhibition, which was arranged in the closed loft upstairs, represents the life of the Jewish people in Sopron.


CASTLE DISTRICT

Along with the former moat the road and square system had been developed around the city and it has the widest, arch type Castle District. Its inner line of houses follow the line of castle wall. In the place of market stalls from the Middle-Ages, houses in baroque, rococo and copf style were built, often in the same size, from the 18th century. The outer line of houses had been created in the Middle-Ages, in baroque, rococo, then classicist style. Today we can find the most elegant shops here, in the Castle District.


MARIA-STATUE

It was erected in the place of the Annunciation Church of the Middle-Ages, after destroying the church in 1632 so as to impede the Turkish troops to use the tower for shooting the castle from there. The monument was made by Jakob Schletterer a sculptor from Vienna, under he plans of Andreas Altomonte. There are eight stairs leading to the octagonial pulpit. On the high entablement we can find embossments representing Biblical scenes. From this entablement a chorintycal statue erects and there is a Maria-Statue.


ZETTL-LANGER-HOUSE

The famous private collection was founded by Zettl Gusztáv, the friend of Storno Ferenc Junior. Today his descendants live in the house and they show the rich collection to the visitors, which outstanding parts are the local guild reminiscences, Roman findings, valuable chinas, haban jars, tin dishes, weapons. Baroque wooden statues symbolizing seasons, and paintings by Dorfmeister, Veronese, Courtois and engravings by Rembrandt and Dürer are also of great value.


BAKERMUSEUM

Suburbs defended by castle walls were inhabited by farmers and artisans. Walking in the Balfi, Bécsi, Fövényverem and Halász street we can feel the mood of farmer quarter. The oldest bakery building serves as a place for the Bakery Museum, the stone crest representing lions braking pretzel refer to this, as well. From 1686 to 1970 the owners of the house were bakers, the exhibiton was organized by keeping the original pieces of furniture.


TWO MOOR-HOUSE

It was reformed from a peasant house of the 17th century to its present form in the beginning of 18th century. The gates between the two houses are tied with an acanthus pillar dome on the twisted columns and two moor figures hold the mouldings. Under the mouldings there is a braided panel, tendril decoration above with the statue of the Little Jesus. We can find in the middle of the gables, in an ornamentical, arch-type box, the statue of Maria and Joseph. At the top of the gables there is the head of Saint Florian and Saint Rokus.


SAINT MICHAEL-CHURCH

The building process had started in the 13th century in roman style. The church had been built over centuries and was finished in gothic style, in the 15th century, with its 48 high tower. Its sidewalls are fixed by buttresses. At the bottom of the tower through the labelled gate we can enter the church, which is divided into three naves by eight huge coloumn. The neogothic main triptych was designed by Storno Ferenc Senior. The old main altar painting is the work by Bartholomeus Altomonte. The most valuable masterpiece of the church is a Madonna-statue.


KÁROLY-HEIGHT TOWER

We can get to know several wonders of nature in the paths netting around the forest. The first wooden watch-tower was built by Romwalter Károly, enthusiastic patriot in 1876 at his own expense. On the first floor of the newer 23 m high quarry stone tower there is an exhibition of high standard showing the work of three scientist of nature (who were well-known in Europe) Kitaibel Pál, Gombocz Endre and Kárpáti Zoltán and the main characteristics of Sopron Landscape Protection Area. From the two upper floor of the watchtower we can see all the places of Sopron, with the Szárhalmi-forest and the shining Fertõ-lake. The lovely view is embraced by the Wienerwald on the left and snowy peaks of Schneeberg.


WHITE-FRIAR CHURCH

We can enter the church on the baroque stairs of the 18th century decorated with statues of Saints. The church was built in the 15th century and later its cluster. Originally it was owned by the friars of St. Paul, then the cluster was handed over to white friar nuns and they also reform the church. The facade was reformed into gothic style in the 18th century. Recently pieces of frescos from the Middle-Ages have been excavated. Its main altar painting the so-called Black Maria is the copy of Czestochowa shrine picture.
