Humans had settled here in the Pre Stone Age, however, their fossils are originated only from the Stone Age. The oldest findings were found near Ágfalva, Kópháza, Sopronkõhida nd objects from the Stone Age were also found in the valley of Ikva. People of the Iron Age moved from the plains to the mountains. Their castles were walled. First inhabitants of these ground castles were Illyrians. Around the middle of the 4th century the Celts came into the country. Then legions of the Roman Empire invaded Transdanubia about 100 A. D. A group of traders and veterans settled near Fertõ lake at the junction of Vindobona and Carnuntum, and then they found a town near Borostyánkõ road. They became the clerks of the castles and they were responsible for the benefice of the Emperor. Scarbantia-Sopron developed into an important settlement by they work. There were a Capitolium, a forum and an amphitheatre in the city. The remained huge Statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva made of marbles also proved greatness of the town.

After the Roman invasion Avar tribes owned the territory for a while, and then it became the part of the Franc Empire of Charles the Great. In the 10th century Magyars invaded Sopron and its environs after their Settlement in Hungary. The town was the part of the border protection system. It became an important settlement under the reign of Stephen the First, it was led by a lord lieutenant. It was named after its first lord lieutenant, Suprun.

In the beginning of the 19th century French troops invaded Hungary imposing a huge burden on the town. It was followed by the devalvation and Austrian economic oppression, which was restraining local trade and industry, as well. With introducing the Reform Age beneficial effect of Széchenyi could be experienced. Adventurous processes were felt again, railway from Sopron to Vienna was built. The town was an enthusiastic supporter of ideas of the Reform Age, then he Hungarian Revolution.

In 1921 Sopron proved its loyalty again, made a decision about its portion with a referendum and stayed Hungarian. The town suffered a lot in the last part of the Second World War. It was hit by series of air-raids and was a victim of fascist terror. In 1946 most of the German-speaking inhabitants were deported. Those, whose stayed lived their ordinary life in a dusty, crumbled small town under council system.
However their vitality did not fail. First signs of development started with organizing Festival Weeks of Sopron, then celebrating 700th anniversary of the town existence. Performances of Cave Theatre in Fertõrákos were world-famous and Sopron got the Europe-award in 1975 for renovating monuments of the old times. Besides Buda Sopron is the most outstanding preserver of the ancient picture of town.
