Weekend trip to Hévíz (Hévíz)

Hévíz, which is Hungarian for "healthy water," is located just 190 kilometres (118 miles) south-east of Vienna. On Saturday, October 23, at around noon, we headed for the Rogner Hotel & Spa Lotus Therme. It took us exactly 2½ hours to reach our destination.

Check-in was very fast and efficient. We made advance reservations two weeks earlier, both for the hotel room and for the beauty treatments. So at check-in we not only got our room keycards, but also a time sheet with our pre-ordered treatments along with instructions on what to wear.

Speaking of "what to wear" - the clothing of choice for the guests is a bath robe, which the hotel provides for free. Everywhere you look there are people in white bath robes and bathing slippers. There is just one room where you have to dress smart casual - the restaurant.

We had a nice room with a view of the pool. The queen size bed was not the best we had ever slept in, but the room features air condition, a TV with mostly Austrian and German channels, pay TV, and an in-room safe, where you can store your valuables, while running around with your swimwear, your slippers and your white bath robe.

The hotel features an indoor and an outdoor pool, which are connected to each other. Pools are open from 7am to 10pm. The outdoor pool closes at 9pm. There is also a thermal bath. The water is purely natural and comes directly from the Thermal Lake of Hévíz.

Hévíz has two thermal cure springs, which emerge from a steeply-sloping rock crater at a depth of 38 metres in the thermal lake. The springs, whose temperatures are 38°C and 42°C (100 / 108°F), are in constant action, so that the thermal lake's water is renewed within three days. Europe's largest natural thermal lake, surrounded by lotus flowers, is one of the unique features to be found in Hévíz. The lake is 4.5 hectares (11 acres) in size, in summer the water temperature is between 32 and 38°C, cooling in winter to a pleasant 24 to 26°C.

The same day we arrived Lianne was booked for a "Milk and Honey Body Wrap". Afterwards, after a relaxing swim, we went for the dinner buffet in the restaurant. The food was really great, and so was the bottle of local white wine. They offer two kinds of soup, a salad bar, cold cuts, several main dishes, ice cream, and a dessert station with the incredible "Somlòi Galuska" (a mixture of sponge cake, cream, raisins, rum and chocolate) and a selection of delicious local cheeses. So we spent at least two hours trying to taste everything, while a live band played local traditional tunes.

Sunday morning we started the day with the breakfast buffet. To our surprise they not only offered the "usual" breakfast items like fresh bread, cold cuts, scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, jam, cheeses, assorted fruits, juices, fruit salad and yogurt but they also offered sparkling wine. And everything is included in the room rate.

Around noon we took a two hour walk to the famous Thermal Lake, then to the village of Hévíz and back to the hotel. Then it was time for Lianne's second beauty treatment, the "Vital-Control" facial treatment. The rest of the day ended like the day before: pool, thermal bath, and dinner buffet.

On Monday morning it was time to pack our suitcases and head home. We enjoyed the delicious breakfast buffet and then checked out of the hotel at 11am. The hotel bill for two nights accommodation, the beauty treatments, a snack at the bar, two dinners with wine and tips was in the amount of 123.368 Hungarian Forint, which equals 490 Euros.
