Situated on the northern shore of Lake Balaton Balatonfüred in 1971 became the first Hungarian town officially designated a spa resort. Regional wine culture was acclaimed when the city received the title 'International town of grapes and wine'. It is also famous for the Anna Ball, held here annually since 1825.
The acidulous springs near the Balaton shores have been known since the 17th century. They gained significance when the mineral waters were first used for medicinal baths. The beginnings of spa culture in Balatonfüred are thought to date back to the early 1700's.
The water from the springs were declared medicinal in 1722 and a spa house operated here as early as 1765. One highlighted location in the bathing scene was the Classicist drinking hall erected around the Kossuth Spring in the middle of Healing Square (Gyógytér).
Its lively social life resulted in the establishment of the town as a political and cultural centre from the late 18th century. The first permanent theatre in Transdanubia was built here in 1831, and the first steamboat on Lake Balaton set out from here in 1846.
Development of the town's resort area began in the second half of the 19th century, at which point its hospital also became a renowned medicinal site. Balatonfüred's prominent role on the northern shore of Lake Balaton dates back to this boom.
The manifestations of its social life are still palpable in the tradition of the Anna Ball which was first held in the Zopf-style Horváth Mansion. The Jókai Villa also became a social centre at around the same period. Today it is home to the memorial museum of the writer Mór Jókai.
Roman Catholic church
The Catholic church on Saint Stephen's Square was erected in a late Baroque style about 1790. Locals call it 'the red church' due to its building material, the locally quarried Permian red sandstone.
Church ruins
The ruins of the Árpád Age church of the former village of Papocska sit on a hillock. The church was originally built in a Romanesque style upon the walls of a Roman house. During the 14th-15th centuries it was remodelled into a Gothic style.
This cave is neither outstanding in size nor does it hold many dripstone formations. However, it is characterised by its formations that reveal the layers of the limestone deposited millions of years ago and by those forms that suggest the evolution of the cave. The cave is open to the public and is both paved and lit.
The hot waters bubbling up from below played the principal role in the evolution of the cave. The aragonite peastones on the layers give this subterranean world a special atmosphere.
The cave was discovered in 1882 and developed in 1934. It is named after the famous researcher Balaton Lajos Lóczy Snr. who also supported the research of caves in Hungary.
The air temperature in the cave varies between 11 and 13 degrees Centigrade in the summer, and between 6 and 10 degrees Centigrade in the winter.
National Cardiology Hospital
Elizabeth Court (Erzsébet-udvar), after which the present sanatorium is named, was built on the site of the former bathing houses, or rather in addition to them. Facing Lake Balaton, it was constructed in an early Eclectic style between 1869 and 1871.
The 1718 annual estate inventory of the Tihany Abbey (Tihanyi Apátság) was amended 1 or 2 years later with the remark that there are mineral waters in Balatonfüred. Based on this information the town has seen a steady development since then. The construction of new bathing facilities, the annexation of new and old, and the renovation of existing facilities have resulted in the current building complex.
By the beginning of the 20th century the sanatorium already enjoyed international fame. In November 1926 the great Hindu poet, Rabindranath Tagore, also sought healing in the Elizabeth Sanatorium.
The grounds of the institution are protected as a hospital zone. In recognition of outstanding results achieved in healing, in 1971 Balatonfüred was pronounced a city for convalescence.
Drinking Hall
Antal Fruman's Classicist drinking hall built over the Kossuth Spring in 1800 and then altered in 1853 stands at the centre of Healing Square (Gyógytér).
Several springs rise to the surface in this area and thus Gyógytér has been the centre of Balatonfüred for many years. Patients strolled here taking the mineral water drinking cure as this was already the scene of bathing culture as long as 150 years ago.
Horváth House
Completed in 1798 the Horváth House is the most noteworthy Zopf building of the Transdanubian region. It is famous for the fact that on 26th July 1825 the first Anna Ball was arranged here in honour of the daughter of the house.
The house belonged to the Szentgyörgyi-Horváth family at that time. The Anna Ball was a great success and Anna Krisztina Horváth was soon proposed to by a hussar officer, Ernő Kiss, who was to become one of the martyrs of Arad for his stance in favour of independence. The tradition of the ball still thrives. In fact it is one of the most significant events of the social calender.
A memorial tablet made in the Pécs Zsolnay ceramics factory with the lines of Dezső Keresztúry bears witness to its past.
Tagore promenade
The nearly 1-kilometre long promenade was named after celebrated Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore, who was healed here in 1926. In gratitude, Tagore planted a linden tree in the park, and his example has been followed by celebrities ever since.
According to a Hindi legend, he who plants a linden tree in their later years will live to see the tree grow leaves. Tagore lived for another 14 years after planting his tree.
Over the decades, a small park has emerged around the poet's tree and statue.
